About this collection

The child wriggling under the table, the one who holds it together all day and falls apart at home, the one who reads well but can't spell: behind each there may be a need nobody has named yet. Teachers and TAs are usually the first to notice, and often unsure what to try.

This pathway covers a lot of ground. You'll learn to spot the signs of dyslexia, dyspraxia, speech and language needs, autism, PDA and self-regulation difficulties, and to tell whether a restless pupil needs calming down or waking up. For pupils with SEMH needs or emotionally based school avoidance, you'll learn to read behaviour as communication and plan a return in steps they can manage.

Most of it comes down to small changes, like a spare pencil, an exit pass or a quieter corner, so you can start with the next lesson you teach.

What you'll learn

  • Recognise the signs of common needs, from dyslexia and dyspraxia to autism and PDA
  • Adapt your classroom and lessons so pupils with SEND can take part
  • Read challenging behaviour as communication and respond calmly
  • Support a pupil with emotionally based school avoidance back in manageable steps
  • Use scaffolds and short interventions that pupils grow out of
