About this course

Someone tells you they're in a very dark place. Do you know what they mean, and what you'd do next? In a mental health crisis the first few minutes matter, and most people worry about getting them wrong.

A crisis can look like overwhelming panic or talk of self-harm or suicide, and there are often earlier changes in mood, sleep or behaviour. You'll learn to spot both, and how to respond in the moment: make the space safe, stay calm and present, don't assume, and ask what they mean by a "dark place". You'll also learn when to seek help straight away, including when to call the emergency services or go to A&E, and how to find local support.

Afterwards, you'll know how to follow up, make a safety plan with the person and look after yourself.
