About this collection

In a secondary school a teaching assistant might work with six classes in a day, some of them for the first time, and a request to cover a lesson can land with five minutes' notice. Teenagers are quick to test a new adult.

Getting them on side starts in the first few minutes, with habits like giving the likely tester a job. You'll also learn the routines and motivation that head off low-level disruption before it starts. Outside the classroom, you'll know who's likely to be round the table at a TAC or EHCP review meeting and what they need from you.

The aim is a TA who is steady in any room, whether that's a Year 9 lesson or a multi-agency meeting.

What you'll learn

  • Get a class you don't know on side in the first few minutes
  • Choose a few non-negotiables and hold them calmly
  • Motivate pupils with hooks and tasks that have a real purpose
  • Deal with low-level disruption without stopping the lesson
  • Contribute facts, not hunches, at TAC and EHCP review meetings
