About this course

"Make the right choice" assumes a child can think straight in that moment. When they're overwhelmed they usually can't. Their survival brain has taken over, and a red card or time out only teaches them that adults back away when things get hard.

You'll learn different words to reach for. A simple formula (name, feeling, behaviour) turns "we don't swear in this school" into "Sarah, you're frustrated with your maths and it's making you want to give up, so you walked out." You'll also look at consequences that teach, like helping put a display back up or fetching a tissue for the child they hurt. And there are calm boxes and headphones, which let a child settle before you ask anything of them.

If your behaviour policy and your mental health policy seem to pull in different directions, this will help you bring them closer together.

  • For early career teachers, governors and 6 other roles. Early years, primary, secondary and special.
