About this course
By the time they reach college, many learners have decided reading isn't for them. Some still struggle to decode. Others read fluently but freeze at an inference question, or have never thought of a writer as a person with a purpose. One student who seemed unable to read in English turned out to be happily reading a fishing magazine in the canteen.
This course helps you work out which gap you're dealing with. You'll see how adult phonics can start from the vocational words learners already use. There's a way to turn GCSE and Functional Skills assessment objectives into "I can" statements learners can track, and a plan for a reading lesson with pre-reading, discussion and room to get things wrong.
Metacognitive strategies help learners notice when a text stops making sense and go back, and discussion points make it easy to use with your department.
