What you'll learn

  • Question whether an injury or change in mood is really down to a child's SEND
  • Compare a child with others at the same developmental stage, not the same age
  • Explain a child's needs and vulnerabilities clearly to other professionals
  • Spot the online and exploitation risks that come with social isolation
  • Support families of children with SEND while still challenging when you need to

About this course

When a child with SEND arrives with a bruise, goes quiet or starts lashing out, it's easy to put it down to their condition. That's how signs of abuse get missed, and disabled children are 3.4 times more likely to be abused or neglected.

Starting from Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), you'll get into the habit of asking one question: if this child didn't have SEND, how would I read this? You'll see why isolation leaves many of these children open to exploitation online. You'll also learn how to stay close to families without losing the ability to challenge them, and what to watch for around reasonable force, intimate care and alternative provision.

You know these children better than most professionals they'll meet, so you're the one who can explain their needs and speak up for them.

  • For governors, middle leaders and 3 other roles. All phases. England only.
