About this course
Some students in alternative provision bring a great deal with them: trauma, conflict at home, pressure from older young people outside school, and a run of schools that didn't work out. You try one intervention after another, and nothing seems to hold.
An AP leader who has worked with many of these students gives you a way to see the whole picture. Map risk and protective factors in four areas (the child, their family, school and the community) and pull them into a one-page mental health profile every adult working with the student can see. Then change one thing at a time and review it.
For the student who's still stuck, there's a "rethink" meeting. The key people sit down and strip it back to what's been tried and what's worked. Sometimes that means a referral to CAMHS or a different setting, and your record shows what you've already done.
- For early career teachers, governors and 6 other roles. All phases.
