About this course
A falling-out with a friend can feel as big to a seven-year-old as a break-up does to an adult. Add worries about money at home, frightening news, climate change and what they see on social media, and it's no surprise more children are struggling. Around one in six children aged 8 to 16 now has a probable mental health problem.
This course helps you notice the changes that can mean a child is finding things hard: trouble sleeping, going off their food, losing interest in a hobby they loved, or tummy aches with no obvious cause. It also gives you ways to help. Check in with them regularly, help them put a name to what they feel with an emotions wheel ("name it to tame it"), and explain upsetting news in words that suit their age.
