About this course
"They were fine in my lesson." Maybe. A lot of anxiety stays hidden in a class of 30, and many of the students living with it have no diagnosis and a long wait for help.
Everything here is strategy, drawn from years running a unit for students at risk of exclusion, many of them too anxious to come in at all. The principles are simple: don't wait for a diagnosis, don't dig for causes, and agree plans with the student rather than for them. A square of fabric with a favourite scent on it costs pennies. A private code, like sharpening a pencil at your desk, tells you a student needs a job to do. A time-out works better with an adult or a next step attached. And a big fear can be broken into a menu of small steps the student picks from.
- For early career teachers, mental health leads and 5 other roles. Post-16, primary, secondary and special.
