About this course
You walk into a classroom to meet a new pupil and he throws every pen he has at you, then the books. Later you find out what happened to him, and why a stranger walking in felt dangerous. Behaviour from pupils with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs is often telling you something they can't put into words.
This course treats SEMH as the special educational need it is, and shows you how to adapt for it as you would for dyslexia. You'll look at the room itself, plan lessons with calmer transitions and built-in breaks, and give pupils a non-verbal way to tell you how they're doing, like a colour check-in. Three modules on relationships introduce PACE (playfulness, acceptance, curiosity, empathy), including why you don't start with the P.
There's help with looking after yourself and your colleagues too, because this work takes its toll.
- For early career teachers and teachers. All phases.
