About this course
She works hard, reads constantly and seems to get on with her friends. Then she gets home and melts down, or shuts down, and her parents wonder what they're doing wrong. Autistic girls are often brilliant at copying others and hiding how hard the day is, so many aren't recognised for years.
Your guide is an autistic woman who wasn't diagnosed until her 30s, despite working in autism herself. You'll learn what masking looks like, why friendships often start to go wrong around Year 5, and which signs to watch for. Then come the things you can do straight away: a calm space in the classroom, mini-resets built into her day, and teaching her how friendships work.
Diagnosis is slow. Treating her as if she's autistic in the meantime does no harm, and it can make a real difference to how she copes.
- For early career teachers, governors and 7 other roles. All phases.
