About this course

Nothing reaches long-term memory without first getting a pupil's attention, and that's harder than it sounds. Some pupils spend a lesson focused on the wrong thing. Others won't try at all, because getting it wrong in front of the class feels too risky.

Gaining that attention is the first of three steps to long-term learning. You'll learn how to build a classroom where pupils are comfortable with discomfort. You'll also learn to share learning outcomes and success criteria they can actually use (a drawing task shows what happens when you don't). There are four ways to make an idea stick by making it tangible, clear, satisfying and concrete, and dual coding, pairing words with images, gets more into working memory without overloading it.

The course also covers practice and feedback, and how to teach pupils to transfer what they learn to new situations.

  • For early career teachers and teachers. Post-16, primary and secondary.
