About this course

Around two-thirds of children in alternative provision have an identified social, emotional and mental health need. Many arrive after exclusions or failed managed moves, with thin paperwork from their last school, and some will be with you for only a few weeks.

An experienced AP leader, who has run an independent provision, shows how to take a whole-setting approach anyway. Start with an honest audit of how mentally healthy your provision is, then run assess, plan, do, review for the whole setting, not only for individual students. Add mental health questions to your referral form, notice the "1% wins" in a short placement, and agree how the provision, the home school and parents will keep each other informed.

What does it look like when it works? Staff greet every student at the door with a fresh start, and sometimes the call home is to say it's been a good day.

  • For early career teachers, mental health leads and 5 other roles. Post-16, primary, secondary and special.
