About this course
Some children arrive with years of good experiences of adults behind them, and they trust you by the end of the first week. Others have had few safe adults, or none, and every raised voice confirms what they already expected.
This is about reaching those children, one small habit at a time. You'll learn to see the child before the label, and to speak slow, low and low (slow pace, low volume, low pitch) when a situation is heating up. A nod across the corridor matters, and so does telling a child something reminded you of them at the weekend. When you get it wrong, and everyone does, you'll know how to say sorry properly and work out with the child what to do differently next time.
Pick the ideas that feel doable. They work with one child, a class or a whole school, and you can start tomorrow.
- For governors and mental health leads. Primary, secondary and special.
