About this course

A pupil hangs back after the lesson and tells you they think they're trans, or gay, or that they're not sure yet. It may be the first time they've said it to anyone, and how you respond matters.

There's a clear, calm way to handle that moment. Recognise the courage it took, find a time when you can give them your full attention, and listen without judgement, positive or negative. You'll know which promises you can make about confidentiality and which you can't, when a concern goes to your designated safeguarding lead, and whether you have to tell parents.

Above all, you'll be ready to help a young person feel heard, and to support them towards talking to their family when it's safe for them to do so.

  • For early career teachers, governors and 4 other roles. Post-16, primary, secondary and special.
