About this course
Some Year 7s hold it together brilliantly for the first fortnight. Then the new timetable, lost friendships and a building they still can't find their way around catch up with them, and lateness or absence starts to creep in.
There are nine practical ideas here for primary and secondary staff to make the Year 6 to Year 7 transition go better. You'll pass on what works for each pupil, including what you've come to like about the harder ones. Make the new school familiar before September with photos, maps and longer, relaxed visits. Help children find friends who share their interests, and teach the unwritten rules of break, lunch and the canteen queue.
You'll also plan a safety net: a trusted adult for every pupil and proactive check-ins in weeks two to six. There's a handout of the nine tips and a student transition passport to use.
- For early career teachers, mental health leads and 5 other roles. Primary and secondary.
