About this course
A lot of a child's day happens outside lessons: at the front desk, in the lunch queue, on the minibus. The adults there make dozens of quick calls about who to greet, who to keep an eye on and whose noise to challenge. That's where unconscious bias creeps in.
Bias grows out of the mental shortcuts everyone relies on, and you'll see in plain terms how it shows up in those moments. Take the pupil who misbehaves on the bus once and becomes "that child", watched more closely every day after. Children notice, and many are already expecting it.
What it asks of you is small. Build in a pause before acting on a gut reaction, and ask yourself whether you'd respond the same way to a different child or family. Nobody's suggesting you've done anything wrong. It's about being as fair as you already mean to be.
- For support staff and teaching assistants. All phases.
