About this course
Plenty of form tutors notice a student who isn't right and then say nothing, because they're scared of making it worse. Meanwhile the student is carrying it on their own.
Listening is most of it. You'll learn to listen to understand, not to plan your reply, and not to back away when a young person wants to talk about self-harm or eating. You'll also have a couple of phrases to hold on to: "I can't fix it, but I can make right now feel a little bit different", and "Thank you for trusting me with this".
You don't need to have the answers. Young people often remember a five-minute conversation with someone who really heard them as the point where things started to change.
- For early career teachers, middle leaders and 4 other roles. Post-16, primary, secondary and special.
