About this course

Most school staff now know the word trauma, and plenty could tell you what ACEs are. Knowing that doesn't tell you what to do with the child who can't sit still, keeps tripping over their own feet and seems to have no empathy for anyone.

Calm, Connect, Communicate gives you a sequence to follow. Trauma affects the brainstem first, then the part of the brain that connects us to other people, then the thinking brain, so support has to go in the same order. You'll pick up simple ways to settle a child through rhythm, stretch and left-right movement (clapping games count), and an exercise with rough, smooth and precious stones that helps a child talk about their day.

It also explains why trauma can look a lot like ADHD, autism or dyspraxia, which is worth knowing before anyone reaches for a label.
