What you'll learn

  • Recognise how negative stereotypes of teenagers shape their behaviour in school
  • Explain unconscious bias, microaggressions and intersectionality in plain terms
  • Greet and correct pupils in ways that keep them feeling welcome
  • Notice your own bias towards a pupil who's had a string of detentions
  • Plan lessons that let teenagers explore identity and belonging safely

About this course

Plenty of teenagers arrive at your door already braced. They've been followed round a shop, told to keep the noise down by a bus driver before they'd said a word, and seen the headlines about people their age. A classroom that feels like more of the same gets the same defensive response.

Once you've seen the world from a teenager's side, there's plenty you can change. You'll get to grips with unconscious bias, single narratives and microaggressions, and see how a different greeting ("good to see you" before "shirt in, please") changes whether a pupil wants to come in at all. There are ideas for lessons on identity and belonging in any subject, including using the protected characteristics in the Equality Act 2010 as lesson content.

  • For early career teachers, senior leaders and 3 other roles. Secondary.
