About this course
Most teaching assistants are asked to run an intervention at some point, often with little training, in a corridor or a cloakroom, with 20 minutes to make a difference.
Small things make those sessions count. Pitch the work so pupils are stretched but can get there with support. Carry a tray of kit (bead strings, place value grids, sound mats) so pupils can help themselves. Teach it differently from the lesson that didn't work, with something practical like a card sort or moving to the right corner of the room. Keep sessions short and quick, a minute of you then a minute of them.
Take a baseline at the start and check against it, so you and the class teacher can see the progress, and change course when there isn't any.
- For middle leaders and support staff. All phases.
