About this course
Sensory toys can cost a fortune, and some get a glance before they're pushed aside. Meanwhile the recycling bin fills up with things that smell, rattle, shine and crinkle.
Start by looking at packaging with "sensory eyes" before it goes: a Marmite jar that still smells after 10 years, a nearly empty salt pot that sounds like waves, foil that catches the light. Then make something, usually with no sewing. Pull a holey sock over the end of a cut pop bottle and you've got a bubble "elephant's trunk". Poke holes in a milk carton, drop in some orange potpourri, and it's a scent bottle.
These are ideas a former special school teacher uses every week in her own sensory service, but she'd rather you went off and made your own, built around whatever your child loves.
