About this course
The same comment can land as a challenge for one teacher and a threat for another. Much depends on what they think the feedback is for, and whether it's heading for an appraisal file.
You'll learn to get that conversation right. Adapt feedback to each teacher's experience and to what they asked you to look at. Try descriptive feedback, where you say what you saw and let the teacher explain it, using a sociogram that maps who spoke to whom. And have questions ready ('tell me about this part of the lesson') that leave the teacher doing the thinking.
There's practical advice, too, for the lesson that went badly: don't put the conversation off, choose your words with care, and agree next steps the teacher can control.
- For governors, middle leaders and senior leaders. All phases. England only.
