About this course
By Friday, some children have already lost Monday's sound. Phonics works when sounds are practised again and again until children know them without thinking, and when the books they read use only the sounds they've been taught.
A simple weekly rhythm helps: four days of new sounds, then a day spent going back over them. Practising all 42 main sounds and their alternatives yourself means the sounds you model are the right ones. You'll notice which children are struggling to blend while the session is still going, and give them more of it the next day. And a child who reads the same matched book in class and again at home that evening gets twice the practice.
Practice doesn't have to stop when the carpet session ends. Flashcards on your lanyard, labels with sound buttons and a well-stocked reading area keep children using their sounds all day.
- For early career teachers, support staff and 2 other roles. Early years and primary.
