What you'll learn

  • Spot sensory overload in a classroom, including competing background noise
  • Use visual lists and task breakdowns to support executive function
  • Work with monotropic focus and special interests rather than against them
  • Recognise masking and use the SPACE approach to help a child feel safe
  • Review your behaviour policy for rules that disadvantage neurodivergent pupils

About this course

An autistic pupil can seem fine all day and fall apart the moment they get home. Often they've spent every lesson masking while they filter out the traffic outside, the buzzing whiteboard and the scraping chairs, then get moved from maths to English just as they were absorbed.

This webinar comes from an autism specialist who is autistic herself and a parent of autistic children. You'll understand sensory differences, executive function, monotropic thinking and masking well enough to explain them to colleagues. The fixes cost next to nothing: movement jobs like handing out books, visual lists, and a clear countdown before a change of task.

Then look hard at your own policies. A rule like 'show me good sitting' can tell an autistic child they're failing, even when they've been told it doesn't apply to them.

  • For early career teachers, governors and 5 other roles. All phases.
