About this course

Pupils decide very quickly whether you're in charge. A lot of that rests on things you might not notice yourself doing: where you stand, where your eyes go, how your voice sounds when someone pushes their luck.

Once you know the signals, you can use them on purpose. Scan the room so pupils believe you have eyes in the back of your head, keep your voice calm instead of shouting, and treat the seating plan as a behaviour tool. For your most disaffected pupils there's co-operative group work, where the group succeeds or fails together and nobody can coast.

Holding it together are three principles: openness, consistency and fairness. A pupil contract makes the rules clear, and a right of reply keeps things fair when something goes wrong.

  • For early career teachers, governors and 2 other roles. Post-16, primary, secondary and special.
