About this course

Too many observations end up watching a performance. The teacher puts on the lesson they think you want to see, you note it down, and nobody learns much from it, least of all the teacher.

This first part of a four-part series helps you tell whether pupils are learning or just busy. That comes down to asking better questions. You'll practise them on five minutes of a hair and beauty lesson from our recorded sample lessons, where a warm class can hide what the teacher missed. You'll also be clearer about what observation is for in your school, and where lesson visits sit within an Ofsted deep dive.

The presenter has used lesson observation in school improvement work in primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities.

  • For governors, middle leaders and senior leaders. All phases. England only.
