About this course

Speech and language therapists now often set the targets and leave the day-to-day work to schools. That can suit pupils, who tend to do better with adults they know. But it means you need to know what to look for and what to do about it.

Speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) cover a lot of ground, from delayed speech and selective mutism to a small vocabulary on arrival at school. You'll learn the signs worth a referral, like calling a whale a shark, and how to run a simple speech sound check with picture cards. There are practical supports too: Makaton signs, word webs for new topic vocabulary, and visual timetables.

It also sets out what a communication champion does and what a communication-friendly classroom looks like.

  • For early career teachers, parents and 2 other roles. All phases.
