  • Ask twice, and keep going when the first answer is "I'm fine"
  • Listen with your full attention and respond with empathy rather than advice
  • Point colleagues to CALM, Mind, talking therapies or an employee assistance scheme
  • Challenge the throwaway comments that stop men asking for help

About this course

Three quarters of people who die by suicide are men, and plenty of the men in your staff room would still rather say "I'm fine" than admit they're struggling. Fear of looking weak, and years of being told to toughen up, keep a lot of them quiet.

The three Ds (duration, distress and a disabling effect on everyday life) help you judge when a colleague's bad fortnight needs more than a kind word, before things get serious. Then you ask, and when he brushes you off, you ask again. You'll also learn a simple checklist for listening properly, and where to point someone next, from CALM and Mind to your school's employee assistance scheme.

There's a harder job for all of us too, which is calling out the "man up" comments in the staff room, even when they come from a friend.

  • For early career teachers, governors and 6 other roles. All phases.
