What you'll learn
- Write learning objectives that say what pupils will learn, not just what they'll do
- Plan your own role in an activity so you're not firefighting
- Check understanding across the whole class and adapt the lesson as you go
- Give the least support first, so pupils stay independent
- Plan and direct the work of other adults in the classroom
About this course
As a teaching assistant you've probably spent lessons darting from table to table, or with a queue of children waiting for your help. As an HLTA you're the one planning the learning, and sometimes directing other adults in the room.
This course follows the HLTA professional standards and makes each one practical. You'll learn to write an objective about the learning rather than the task ("write a letter" isn't one). You'll plan what your own role in an activity will be, and check the whole class rather than the few hands that go up. There's a clear model for giving a pupil support: start with the least help and add more only when it's needed, so they don't come to depend on you.
Directing a TA you used to work alongside can feel awkward. You'll leave knowing how to plan their time so it makes a difference.
- For teaching assistants. All phases.
