What you'll learn
- Recognise the many kinds of loss children grieve, beyond bereavement
- Acknowledge a child's pain rather than trying to fix it or cheer them up
- Use clear, honest words about death instead of euphemisms
- Set up a simple grief plan so home and school share the same information
- Answer hard questions honestly, including "I don't know, but I'll find out"
About this course
Faced with a grieving child, a lot of adults freeze. We don't want to upset them or say the wrong thing, so we say nothing, and the child is left alone with it. It isn't only death, either: a parent in prison, a family splitting up or a lost comforter can hit just as hard.
This course builds the confidence to talk. You'll see why acknowledging a child's pain helps more than cheering them up, and why euphemisms leave children more confused than plain words. Side-by-side moments, over Lego or on a walk, often make it easier to start. And there are small, practical ideas, like a one-page grief plan agreed with home, and a token you each keep while a question waits for an answer you haven't got yet.
It's taught by an experienced teacher and former assistant head who now researches children's grief.
- For early career teachers, governors and 7 other roles. All phases.
