What you'll learn

  • Build a simple sensory diet of movement breaks into a child's day
  • Use timers and small steps to help a child move between activities
  • Set up a feelings board so a child can show you how they're doing
  • Help a child find calming tools that work for them
  • Use praise and rewards to mark the times they stay calm

About this course

Once you know a child's outbursts come from being overwhelmed rather than naughtiness, the next question is what to do about it. Here are 10 answers, each simple enough to try on your next day in class.

Some change the shape of the child's day: a sensory diet of movement breaks (a few minutes on a trampoline, or a run outside), a predictable routine, and a timer that warns them before an activity ends. Others give the child tools of their own, like a feelings board to check in with each morning and a calming trick they've chosen themselves, whether that's counting to 10 or stepping out of the room for a minute.

There's a reminder that's easy to forget in a hard moment, too. Children copy what they see, so the calmer you stay, the calmer they have to copy.

  • For parents, support staff and 2 other roles. Early years, primary, secondary and special.
