About this course

Staff are asking for a senior leader earlier than they used to, and for situations they'd once have handled themselves. This is about building their confidence back up.

The approach rests on a simple idea: behaviour is communication, and a child who explodes is stuck rather than choosing to be difficult. You'll get models that are easy to share with staff, such as the house model of the brain and the crisis curve, and things to try in class. Praise effort, give choices calmly, swap "why did you do that?" for "what happened?" and speak "slow, low, low". There are calming tools for children too, from breathing around a door to coping cards.

It's taught by a former teacher of 20 years who now works as a child and adolescent counsellor. It also helps you notice when staff are struggling, and make asking for help normal.

  • For middle leaders and senior leaders. Post-16, primary and secondary.
