What you'll learn

  • Co-tell a personal story with a young person with PMLD, following their lead
  • Replace leading yes-or-no questions with real contributions to the story
  • Listen in a way that makes someone want to tell you more
  • Use switches, pod books and objects to give a young person their part
  • Apply partial participation to find what a learner can contribute

About this course

At EHCP reviews, school councils and conferences, young people with PMLD are often in the room while someone else does the talking. "You enjoyed the train journey, didn't you?" isn't really taking part.

Story sharing is a way to change that. You and the young person tell a real story from their life together. They add their part with a switch, a pod book, an object or a firm "no" when you've got it wrong. You'll watch a teacher and her pupil do it live, with a trip to the library that turned into a campaign for sensory books, and see how the listeners' reactions keep a story going.

In a school council example, two pupils with high support needs helped their classmates understand why a noisy dining hall hurt. The idea underneath it all is simple enough: find the part a young person can play.

  • For early career teachers, middle leaders and 4 other roles. Early years, primary, secondary and special.
