About this course
For a learner with PMLD, personal care can fill much of the day: feeds, medication, stretches, changes of position, the hoist. When it's rushed, it simply happens to them. With some planning, each routine is a chance to learn, and it comes round several times every day.
You'll learn to plan the day around the fixed points first (feeds, medication, therapy), so care flows with learning instead of eating into it. Then look for the small moments of control: waiting for a look towards the hoist before it goes up, a sound that means "ready", a slight push of an arm into a sleeve. Give it time, celebrate it, and reduce your support as the skill grows.
There's a clear reminder about dignity, safeguarding and intimate care policies, too, and about why a learner who's tube-fed belongs at the table with friends at lunchtime.
- For early career teachers, parents and 2 other roles. Special.
