About this course
Some boys have decided a lesson isn't for them before they've sat down. You'll know the shrug, and the 'why are we doing this?'
The course is taught by a teacher of more than 20 years who still teaches every day, and every strategy in it is one he uses. The main one is double planning. Spend five minutes looking at your lesson through the eyes of your most reluctant boy and you'll have answers ready before the pushback comes. For reading, make it safe to stumble and start by asking for one sentence. For writing, show what a good one and a bad one look like, then let them mark the bad one.
Running through it is Michael Morpurgo's Not Bad for a Bad Lad. It shows how a teacher who believes in a boy can keep him connected to school, and how one public humiliation can undo it.
- For governors and teachers. Primary and secondary.
