About this course

Special schools are now asked to explain their approach to phonics, and a scheme written for Reception doesn't sit easily with a non-verbal 15-year-old or a class working at pre-formal level. It can feel like a choice between forcing it and leaving some pupils out.

Phonics starts with telling one sound from another, and your sensory stories, intensive interaction and music sessions already build that. You'll get ideas for making sound something pupils can feel and see, with resonance boards, sound-to-light equipment, cued articulation and mirrors for mouth shapes. There's also sensible advice on adapting a commercial scheme, and on sending the sounds you're working on home with a QR code.

It's taught by a consultant who began as a teaching assistant in a special school and later did a PhD on phonics for learners with complex needs.

  • For early career teachers, support staff and 2 other roles. Early years and special.
