About this course
It's tempting, when a colleague brings you a problem, to hand them the answer. Often, though, the problem they bring isn't the real one.
The experienced school leader who teaches this course once thought his difficulty was getting a class to line up outside his room. Talking it through, he realised his real worry was looking foolish in front of colleagues. The framework here, based on Egan's skilled helper model, gets you to that kind of moment. Your mentee tells their story in their own words, you challenge their thinking and explore options together, and they leave with an action plan they own.
Along the way you'll practise open questions and reflective listening, and learn to build more than one explanation for what's going on before settling on one. The same approach works when you mentor pupils.
- For middle leaders, senior leaders and teachers. All phases.
