What you'll learn
- Open a values discussion with everyday scenarios before introducing the official list
- Take each value through the same questions, from definition to whether Britain upholds it
- Run debates on where values clash, such as democracy against individual liberty
- Use international comparisons to ask whether these values are distinctly British
- Help students suggest values missing from the list, like fairness and consent
About this course
Most schools can point to a poster of the four fundamental British values. Getting a Year 9 class thinking about democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and tolerance is another matter, and a list handed down tends to get a shrug.
A former chief executive of the PSHE Association shows you how to take each value and ask the awkward questions. What happens when democracy and liberty pull in opposite directions? Should the police enforce a law they think is disrespectful? Is any of this distinctly British? An opener about two sisters and a chocolate bar gets students talking about fairness and consent before the official list appears. International comparisons, from Swiss referendums to rule of law rankings, give them something concrete to argue with.
You'll finish with a way of teaching the values that trusts students to think, and a good last question: what's missing from the list?
- For early career teachers, governors and 5 other roles. Secondary.
