About this course

Parents whose child hits, threatens or controls them rarely call it violence. They talk about explosive behaviour, walking on eggshells, needing to cut their hours at work. By the time they ask for help they've usually tried every parenting strategy going, and been told, one way or another, that it's their fault.

A doctoral researcher in child to parent violence helps you hear what's being said. You'll learn the risk factors, such as neurodivergence, trauma, care experience and domestic abuse, why stricter rules at home often make things worse, and how a change in school attendance can be an early sign. You'll also know where to point families, from a diary that helps them see triggers to specialist assessments and programmes like non-violent resistance.

The most useful thing you can do costs nothing. Believe the parent.

  • For governors, parents and 2 other roles. Early years, primary, secondary and special.
