About this course
Low-level disruption wears you down. A pupil wanders out of their seat, you ask why, and 10 minutes later you're in a debate the rest of the class is enjoying far more than the lesson.
Most of the fix lies in what you do, not what they do. Give a statement instead of a question ("Open your book and start on question two", not "Why aren't you working?"). Stay with the primary behaviour instead of chasing every distraction, and offer a choice that still lets a pupil back down. Prevention matters as much, with lessons with an obvious purpose, routines pupils can predict, and a room laid out to help.
The ideas come from a teacher who once took on a GCSE group nobody else wanted to teach, and a workbook of activities helps you fit them to your own classes.
- For early career teachers, teachers and teaching assistants. Primary and secondary.
