About this course

In a lot of primary classrooms the top marks in art go to the neatest work. That rewards good motor control, and the child who takes risks with colour or invents their own answer to the task can go unnoticed.

Here you'll plan art and design that values both. You'll map what each year group does, so every child meets drawing, painting and sculpture every year. Then you'll see how skills build from Year 4 to Year 6, starting with a child's shoe drawn from memory and then from life. De Bono's Thinking Hats get children talking about artworks, and clear expectations for each year group take the guesswork out of assessment.

The course is led by a practising artist who has spent years teaching in schools. If you've never trained in art, the step-by-step advice on demonstrating a technique to a class will help most.

  • For teachers and teaching assistants. Primary. England only.
