About this course
By the time a parent tells you they're worried about their child's mental health, they've usually been carrying it for a while. Guilt, fear of being blamed and plain exhaustion make that first conversation hard, and one brush-off can shut the door for months.
Two mothers who have been through it with their own daughters, and now support other families, explain what made the difference for them. It was a professional who said "I'll take you there" instead of handing over another phone number, a check-in call the next day, and being called by their name rather than "Mum". You'll also pick up their biscuit prompts ("KitKat, have a chat"), which sound daft and get parents talking about sleep, breaks and how they really feel.
Most of it costs nothing but time, and you can start with the next parent who comes to you.
- For governors, mental health leads and 4 other roles. All phases.
