About this collection

A teaching assistant's day can take in a reading group, a pupil about to walk out and a quiet word with the teacher about a child who isn't themselves. Much of what good looks like is never written down.

This pathway sets it out against an ordinary school day. Take the child who can't sit still, the one who seems to ignore you, or the one who lashes out when their usual adult is away. Each may have a need nobody has named yet, such as ADHD, a language difficulty or attachment. You'll learn to recognise the signs, try something in class straight away, notice the small change that matters for safeguarding, and tell the teacher what you've seen.

Finish it and you'll have a pathway certificate to mark your first step in the role.

What you'll learn

  • Put the professional standards for teaching assistants into practice day to day
  • Spot and report small changes in a child that could be a safeguarding concern
  • Recognise the signs of ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism, attachment difficulties and SLCN
  • Try practical classroom strategies for each of those needs
  • Feed back to teachers and gather evidence about a pupil's needs
