About this collection
As a primary teaching assistant you're often the adult beside the child who's stuck on a word or staring at a blank page. You may also be the one who knows that child best when the social worker and the SENCo sit down to talk about them.
This pathway covers both sides of the job. You'll get the phonics vocabulary straight (phoneme, grapheme, blending) and the routine most daily sessions follow. You'll learn to tell a child who won't read or write from one who can't yet, because each needs different help, with ideas from comics and subtitles to picture prompts. And you'll know what happens at a TAC or EHCP review meeting, and how to share facts rather than hunches.
You'll go into group work and meetings alike knowing what you're there to do.
What you'll learn
- Explain phonics terms and follow the routine of a daily phonics session
- Tell a reluctant reader or writer from one who is struggling with the skills
- Use picture prompts, comics and the five-finger rule to get children reading and writing
- Know what to expect at TAC and EHCP review meetings
- Share facts about a child in meetings, not opinions or hunches
