About this collection

Some pupils carry more into school than others: a bereavement, a stay in hospital, a cold house, a move between foster placements, or racism nobody took seriously. Their mental health needs are more common and more often missed, sometimes because a change gets put down to their SEND or their background.

Each group gets a course of its own, with a short list of practical steps. They include making sure every pupil can name one adult they trust, asking before you sanction lateness or missing kit, and warning a looked after child early about a change of staff.

You'll also know how to work with families without judgement, and when to bring in specialist help.

What you'll learn

  • Recognise mental health needs that get put down to SEND, background or circumstance
  • Talk to a bereaved pupil directly and plan ahead for difficult dates
  • Remove the cost and shame that can stop children in poverty joining in
  • Make school a safer place for LGBTQ+ pupils and children in care
  • Work with families and specialist services without judgement
