About this collection

Children with profound and multiple learning disabilities grieve like anyone else, yet they're often left out of bereavement support. It's tempting to protect them from the news. That tends to leave them confused and grieving alone, and their grief may show only as a change in breathing or a skill they've lost.

This pathway helps you notice it and respond. You'll learn to talk about death in clear, concrete words backed by photos and objects of reference, and to explain everyday losses, like a member of staff leaving. You'll make personal resources such as sensory memory boxes and story massage, because a picture book about a badger means little to a pupil who needs to touch, hear and smell.

For special schools, there's a plan for sharing news of a death with the whole community on the same day.

What you'll learn

  • Recognise grief in a child's behaviour, body language and breathing
  • Talk about death using clear words, photos and objects of reference
  • Make sensory memory boxes and stories personal to the person who has died
  • Prepare pupils for everyday losses, like a member of staff leaving
  • Plan how your school shares news of a death with every pupil
